SATURDAY MAY 11, I'm teaching Improv Theme & Variation. This is a great class whether you have experience with improv patchwork or not, and I think provides an elemental understanding of the concept, and how it applies to patchwork. A single block pattern can yield an infinite number of variations. In this workshop, we’ll use improvisational patchwork to explore repetitions and variations on a theme. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of the design elements of structure and composition, while building confidence in working with improvisation to create quilt tops that reflect your own voice. Below, student work by Jenny Sullivan Parker, and students work from Modern Quilt Masters Napa and QuiltCon.
SUNDAY MAY 12, I'm teaching my Proverbial Quilt workshop. My Proverbial Quilt pattern is inspired by early “talking” quilts which often featured quotes from the Bible or commemorated public events. Long before I created this pattern, I made my first Proverbial Quilt and improvised all my letters. During this workshop, I’ll show you how easy it is to create your letters this way. It’s much faster, more intiutive, and tons of fun! Come prepared with an idea of what you want to “say” with your finished project, and I’ll get you started! Or, create the phrase as shown on my pattern: “When we are flat on our backs, the only way to look is up. Find release from your cares, tomorrow is another day”. Work below by DSQ and Sarah Minshall.
